Talking of distractions, an empty stomach as well as a loaded stomach are both distractions to the mind of the person engaged in the practice of meditation. This is rather difficult for the beginner in the path of meditation. Therefore, a good time to meditate is before having a meal. If you have just had food, you might fall asleep while meditating.
At the same time, do not try to meditate when you are very hungry.

You should also try to meditate at the same time each day – at whatever time you choose. However, try to make meditation a resolute part of your daily schedule.

- Take a deep breath, inhale slowly and exhale slowly. Do it three to four times
- Focus on the scalp of your head, feel the tingling sensation and then move your attention to your forehead. From forehead, slowly move to other parts of your face, covering your eyebrows, eyes, internal and external ears, nose mouth, teeth, tongue etc.
- By this time your mind and body will feel more relaxed. Continue to breathe normally.
- Keep your focus on your breathing. This will help you not to think of anything else.
- Don’t think about anything. Let the thoughts come and come. Be a passive witness. Don’t stop a thought from entering your mind and don’t force any thought out. Focussing on your breathing is the best way to stay away from getting distracted.
- Just stay like this for the time you have decided for your daily meditation practice – 5, 10 or 15 minutes.
- Keep a Gentle Smile on Your Face : A gentle smile throughout keeps you relaxed, peaceful and enhances your meditation experience. You will see the difference!
- Open Your Eyes Slowly and Gently : As you come near the end of the meditation, don’t open your eyes immediately and start moving about. Rather you should take time to open your eyes and do it slowly. Gradually become aware of yourself and your surroundings.
One of the basic aims of meditation is to quiet your mind and learn to focus better. Ultimately you have to reach a higher level of consciousness and inner calm. Thus you begin your journey on the path of enlightenment and bliss.
