It is a great decision you have taken and given here are a few important yet practical ways to find inner peace.

Is it possible to find inner peace without renouncing the world?

The answer is absolute yes. There is no need to bring any change in your career, profession or whatever you are doing in life. You can continue to be a student, home maker, spouse and even carry on with your activities to reach your target.

In fact, the struggle would be less, you would feel less load on your shoulders and as your practice develops you would glide through effortlessly.

Ways To Find Inner Peace

1. Practice Acceptance

When you can’t change something that you don’t like, it gives rise to negative emotions like frustration, helplessness and sometimes extreme anger. To begin with the type and intensity of the negative emotion is minimal but as many other external or internal irritants grow in number, the negative reaction become faster and goes to higher level of intensity. In other words, it has compounding as well as cumulative effect.

It would be pertinent to understand the type of irritants. One is the external environment while the other is internal environment.

For example, if the Central, State or Federal Government or City Authorities have raised taxes, you can’t do anything about it. This is the example of external environment being out of your control.Continuing with this example, instead of resisting the additional taxes, find the ways to increase your income or reduce your savings or better both.

2. Be at peace with yourself

Now let’s see what the internal environment is. For example, if you are not happy with your average height it is an internal issue. Talk to yourself that what height has got to do with success and other things in life. Many well known personalities in our times and in history were short.

Consider the following famous personalities:

  • Yuri Gagarin – a Soviet cosmonaut, with a height of 5 ft. 2 inches.
  • Voltaire – a French writer, philosopher, had a height of 5 ft. 3 inches
  • Napoleon Boneparte’s height was 5 ft. 6 inches
  • Charlie Chaplin the world famous actor and comedian was 5 ft. 5 inches tall
  • Dustin Hoffman, actor and winner of two academy awards is 5 ft. 6 inches tall
  • Sachin Tendulkar, a renowned batsmen and former Indian cricketer is 5 ft. 5 inches tall
  • Shahrukh Khan , world famous Indian actor and heart throb of millions is also 5 ft. 6 inches tall

Do you think they could have achieved so much if they had allowed their inner conflicts to continuously weaken them?

3. Simplify Life

One of the reasons for inner peace eluding us is our hectic life style features with multi tasking, catching deadlines and keeping the commitments. Ask yourself is all that necessary? Do you have to attend so many parties, seminars, meetings? For example, do you need to buy so many cars, watches, clothes, which would necessitate large parking space, wardrobes, maintenance laundry, dry cleaning etc? This makes daily life unnecessarily busy, hectic and competitive.

For inspiration, you just have to look at the nature. Except for humans, everything else moves at a rhythmic pace. Except humans no one hoards money or goods, except mankind no plant or animal shows off. They just go with the flow.

Hence think of reducing at least some of your needs.

4. Slow Down

Let’s again draw some lessons from nature. Have you ever seen an elephant or a tortoise or a tree in a hurry. The life span of an elephant is up to 70 years, while the turtle can live up to 100 years and a tree can be there for a still longer period of time. On the contrary, cheetah which is the fastest animal lives an average life of 10 to 12 years only.

Don’t try to please too many people. It is better to have a few loyal and committed friends than a large social circle where people envy you, spy on you or try to out-do you.

5. Find a method or a technique to relax your Body, Mind and Soul

The masters, gurus and philosophers from East, have always emphasized upon the need and importance of relaxation. They have also given us so many techniques like Yoga, Meditation, Tai Chi, Deep Breathing and much more. While you may chose or not chose to follow these, there are a number of options like: Watching a movie, listening to music, playing with your pet etc. Do it to enjoy, relax and unwind.

The idea is that there should be at least one activity with you that helps you disconnect from the high pressure and demanding world to put you in touch with inner peace, joy and harmony.

6. Clear Clutter from your life

Anything which you have not used for more than 6 months is a clutter ( barring some exceptions) Clutter can be in the form of physical goods as well as thoughts. Clutter acts to stop the free flow and circulation of good energy. Therefore, make it a regular practice to get rid of clutter from your home, office, car and even mind!! You will notice very often that on clearing clutter you get new ideas and stuck up matter get moving again !

7. Observe a day of Silence and Solitude

This concept, perhaps has its origin from the Indian Hindu and Budhist practice. As different from loneliness, solitude is a deliberate exercise of being in silence, cutting off for a while from others while practicing silence.

The idea is to disconnect from so many distractions of this materialistic world and connect with your higher self. This can be done once a week or once a month or for about an hour every day. This practice when done regularly has immense benefits like raising one’s spiritual vibrations, mindfulness, connecting to the Creator of all that is. Perhaps achieving quietness of mind, harmony with self and inner calm are one of the benefits receivable at the early stages itself. Besides this also helps clear unwanted thoughts, fears and clutter from the mind.

8. Don’t be a control freak or a perfectionist

9. Resolve past and present issues

It is possible that some serious issue is heavily weighing down on your mind. Therefore, it is important to let other things wait and deal with that pressing matter first.

10. Be grateful

There may be many things in your life which have and take them for granted, whereas many people may not be so blessed. Either they don’t have at all ( vision, limbs, good education, good family, supporting parents / spouse etc.) or have to struggle a lot to get them ( two square meals a day, means of transportation, roof above the head).

Take an inventory of everything that you already have in your life; this may include: family, friends, a car, job, enough food to eat, medical facilities, infrastructure like roads, and transportation. Everyday thank Universe for these facilities and blessings to be ever present in your life. This will open doors for more blessings in life and you will attain more inner peace, joy and harmony in life.
